Central Malwa- Bhopal– Raisen– Vidisha area, Copper Kaccha Paisa, 11.91g, Counter stamped, Chaklah Bari Mint, AH 1240, with Devanagari letter “Shri”. Extremely fine, extremely rare. These coins were struck in Central Malwa in response to provide emergency small value currency for labourers working in cotton and / or opium cultivations in early 19th century. Bari is a village now located in Raisen district, south of the historic Raisen fort. Presently much of the old village is submerged in a dam project. But in 19th century it was a regional hub (‘Chaklah’ or market town, as the coin legend suggests).
