Issued under the authority of Mirza Najaf Khan as governor, AH 1192 corresponds to AD 1778, which was quite an eventful year in the history of the area around Delhi. The emperor Shah Alam II appointed Mirza Najaf Khan as his trusted regent against the constant threat of Marathas, Jats, Sikhs. Together with other Iranian noblemen of his camp, Najaf Khan managed to achieve control of the many areas in the immediate vicinity of Delhi, such as the Braj, the Haryana plains, the Upper Doaba and Agra. He managed to win back Agra from the Jats in 1776. The coin is struck during his tenure as the governor of Akbarabad province, and is among the earliest issues with the Fish Mint mark.
