Muhammad Shah, Gold Mohur, 10.88g, Muazzamabad Mint, AH 1135/ RY 5, Obv: Persian legend Sikka Mubarak Badshah Ghazi Muhammad Shah with AH date, Rev: Mint name at bottom, RY and Julus formula (KM# 438.16). Complete Mint name on bottom of recerse. Extreemly fine, extremely rare. The name Muazzamabad was given to Gorakhpur by Muazzam, the eldest son of Aurangzeb and later, emperor Shah Alam Bahadur, when he came in the area to hunt while being a subahdar. It was one of the five sarkars (districts) of the Awadh subah (province). In 1722, Saadat Khan Burhan ul-Mulk was appointed as the governor of Awadh subah along with the Faujdari of Muazzamabad. He subsequently became the first Nawab of Awadh. The coin, dated RY5, should therefore be regarded as an early issue of Awadh.
